This movie is fun! A lighthearted romp through some heavy issues with style and lyricism. What a breath of fresh air where a film reminds us that it's visual medium can be more than a simple regurgitation of plot.
A pointless movie set to poetry, black violence, gratuitous nudity, and foul language. It is even worse than most of Spike Lee's movies which are, in my opinion, crap.
Really bad movie- it's not a satire when you laugh AT the movie and filmmaker and not WITH it. I laughed really hard AT the movie and at how much Spike Lee has lost it. The movie is a garbled mess- not a satire, parody, commentary, adaptation, musical or anything decent- just bad. Good movies matter.
This was a very thought provoking movie. If you watched it strictly for the satire you are missing the point.
Chi-Raq is a good film. It addresses the homicide issue plaguing Chicago using def poetry. I enjoyed it because it highlighted a very real problem through poetry.
it's corny and lame- in fact it's so bad that it's actually unintentionally funny in places- kind of like an Ed Wood movie. That's right, Spike Lee has now attained the status of Ed Wood in Hollywood.
Social issues I see Spike Lee has an artistic vision. I didn't love this movie but I like Spike.
An ancient play, rings true today.
sataire at its dullest not as bad as critics said it was but not that good either.
Spike Lee takes a page from Julie Taymor (Frida, Titus) in this strong film that deals with an important topic.
This film is all the more relevant due to the recent downright evil violence America has seen lately.
A fantasy La La Land mockery concept of what's really going on in Chicago right now socially and racially.
Circa 1970, I saw Lysistrata in an outdoor theatre presentation on the University of Chicago campus. Forty-five years later, I was able to revisit this play because Spike Lee was able to produce a film inspired by this Greek play written by Aristophanes. Instead of two warring factions in the 5th century BC, Spike Lee adapts it for Chicago in 2015. For various reasons, some people did not like this film (most of the critical comments suggest the viewers had no knowledge that the film was as much about violence throughout history as it was about today's American violence).
This movie is so terrible that I think everyone should see it. "Chi-Raq" is an almost laughably tone deaf look at gang violence in Chicago. And, yeah, it's a musical about a sex strike based on an ancient Greek play. Has to be seen to be believed. Sam Jackson plays the sharp dressed chorus and John Cusack is the preacher at an all-black congregation. Spike Lee has slipped a lot since "Do the Right Thing." Also, when Nick "Drumline" Cannon is your leading man, something has gone terribly wrong.
Things rhymed for a reason. This movie is not for everyone and not everyone will understand the message within the message. I appreciated this film.
Once you get what Spike Lee is doing, it's a fairly decent film. He has a very interesting and unique way of expressing his message and he uses film as his artistic medium.
An adult (non-stop profanity) satire on the black-on-black gun violence in South Chicago neighborhood labeled as Chicago-Iraq. After sat through the rap lyrics in the first ten fifteen minutes on crime statistics and racial inequality, it was all fun and game with a lot of rapping and flesh-flashing to make its point: time for both the politicians and people to come together and stop the gang violence.
This is classic Spike Lee for fans of "Do The Right Thing" et al. One of the more meaningful, albeit at times hard to watch, movies I've seen thus far this year.
This is a great film - I loved it - Spike Lee is a man with a beautiful mind - and has always brought the truth to light - this film is no exception - while I am not surprised that it was over looked during award season - that's the way it always goes - ChiRac is an important film - you will enjoy it and your emotions with certainly reveal themselves as well - bravo Spike!!
just awful. every line had to rhyme. no wonder the oscars snubbed spike. had nothing to do with race. this movie is unwatchable. quit after 25 minutes.
