I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery about an ex-lawyer who owns an herb shop in a little dinky town in Texas. Even though it was written in 1993, it doesn't feel terribly dated. Yes, there are some references to older cars and corded phones and out of date styles (including LOTS of pantyhose) but on the whole it felt as if the story could take place today, certainly. China is a capable investigator, given her background, and doesn't flounder or stumble upon clues like other cozy heroines do. She's level headed, with a boyfriend who she regularly sleeps with (something rather uncommon in cozies), no ex-husband, and no kids. In this sense she feels refreshing and honest. Also, there's three murders in this book, not just one, which keeps the action rolling along at a swift pace, unlike other cozies that tend to have a lull in the middle. None of the characters were cliched or overly annoying- they felt like actual people. Throw in a couple of red herrings here, and this was a pretty darn good mystery. I'll certainly be continuing in this series to see what other hijinks China gets herself into.

Well, I have to say I really enjoyed this book, but I figured that I would. I had to wait a while to get this one from the library but it was worth it. I love the characters and am looking forward to their continued development.

This is one of the best series I've read since Rex Stouts, Nero Wolfe. The first book is a bit slow but each one gets better and better. I especially like the recipes, learning about the different herbs, and how to plant a garden. The on going story of all the characters is also great.

Had trouble getting into this one, but after I got past the first chapter, it was enjoyable. Not bad for my first ever mystery.
