This is a wonderful book that celebrates the imagination and is sure to inspire a love of art in kids of all ages. First, the author does a great job telling Matisse's life story in an engaging way, hitting all the important points and offering a number of lesser known fun facts. And second, Matisse is an artist whose works kids are sure to be amazed by. He may have started out painting things in a more realistic way, but the older he got, the more he used bright, vivid colors to create dreamlike paintings bursting with life.

Kids will love seeing how Matisse breaks the rules to produce some of the most important paintings of the 20th century and, besides, who wouldn't be interested in a guy who was part of (and arguably started) a school called "The Wild Beasts" (Fauves)?
