2017 Audie Award Finalist for Audiobook of the Year
The instant New York Times bestseller from the creator of Grey's Anatomy and Scandal and executive producer of How to Get Away With Murder shares how saying YES changed her life. "As fun to read as Rhimes's TV series are to watch" (Los Angeles Times).
She's the creator and producer of some of the most groundbreaking and audacious shows on television today. Her iconic characters live boldly and speak their minds. So who would suspect that Shonda Rhimes is an introvert? That she hired a publicist so she could avoid public appearances? That she suffered panic attacks before media interviews?

With three children at home and three hit television shows, it was easy for Shonda to say she was simply too busy. But in truth, she was also afraid. And then, over Thanksgiving dinner, her sister muttered something that was both a wake up and a call to arms: You never say yes to anything. Shonda knew she had to embrace the challenge: for one year, she would say YES to everything that scared her.

This poignant, intimate, and hilarious memoir explores Shonda's life before her Year of Yes—from her nerdy, book-loving childhood to her devotion to creating television characters who reflected the world she saw around her. The book chronicles her life after her Year of Yes had begun—when Shonda forced herself out of the house and onto the stage; when she learned to explore, empower, applaud, and love her truest self. Yes.

"Honest, raw, and revelatory" (The Washington Post), this wildly candid and compulsively readable book reveals how the mega talented Shonda Rhimes finally achieved badassery worthy of a Shondaland character. Best of all, she "can help motivate even the most determined homebody to get out and try something new" (Chicago Tribune).

I cannot recommend this enough! Read by the author with color and wit, this book will inspire you to start your own Year of Yes!

I gravitate toward memoirs and like them even better if their story is inspirational, so I enjoyed Shonda Rhimes’ Year of Yes. While her writing is a bit more self-promotional than I prefer, she is a convincing champion of self-awareness and personal growth.

Shonda Rhimes is the creative mind behind "Grey's Anatomy", "Scandal", "Private Practice", and "How To Get Away with Murder".
She was challenged when her sister muttered six words - "You never say yes to anything". With this in mind, Shonda said yes to Dartmouth's commencement speech, yes to being interviewed by Oprah, yes to health, and yes to the freedom of play. She also write about how saying goodbye to the character Cristina Yang was so difficult.

I liked Rhimes’ premise, the attitude that one’s life expands with new capabilities and personal growth by saying Yes to things that scare us. I admired her writing style – confiding, witty/funny, attention-catching images. In listening to the audio version I got distracted by the tone of her vocal inflection (that I may have misinterpreted) and heard self-glorification in the frequent repetition of her stellar accomplishments. It’s an entertaining memoir firstly, and a motivational help, secondly, by her personal example.

I thought Shonda Rhimes' story was inspiring and authentic. I loved the audiobook and listening to her tell me her own story.

I purposely checked out the author reading her audiobook version. Glad I did not check out the book. Not impressed and I was kind of disappointed. And I am not a hater. Kudos to Her Highness, Queen of ShondaLand, the self proclaimed, "Badass." I was a faithful GA fan for years, so-so with Scandal, nothing for Private Practice and HTGAWM from time to time. Worth a browse, not a read.

You can quit a job. I can’t quit being a mother. I’m a mother forever. Mothers are never off the clock, mothers are never on vacation. Being a mother redefines us, reinvents us, destroys and rebuilds us. Being a mother brings us face-to-face with ourselves as children, with our mothers as human beings, with our darkest fears of who we really are. Being a mother requires us to get it together or risk messing up another person forever. Being a mother yanks our hearts out of our bodies and attaches them to our tiny humans and sends them out into the world, forever hostages.

Happiness comes from being who you actually are instead of who you think you are supposed to be. Being traditional is not traditional anymore... You don’t want a baby? Don’t have one. I don’t want to get married? I won’t. You want to live alone? Enjoy it. You want to love someone? Love someone. Don’t apologize. Don’t explain. Don’t ever feel less than.
