I still think it's too bad that the best film version of this story was made in 1925. The silent version starring Lon Chaney is a masterpiece. This version, lovely, in color, with a very fine cast was shot on the same set as the 1925 (still standing and reported haunted). Claude Rains is quite good as the Phantom, but the script is stilted and the scenes between Christine and Raoul are weak at best.

I must say, though, I think it's a better film than the 2004. I just wish it had been shot in black and white, as the original was. It would have made the movie much creepier and scary!

I still don't like the fact that Christine goes with Raol or whatever he's called i mean really

GOOD 1943 color film version of a flavor of 'Phantom on the Opera'; interesting contrast to silent 1927/29 version which I also saw recently.
This version is far more operatic because of the orchestral sound and choral stage sequences.

For a melodrama, this is rather fun. Murky, but to be expected for WWII technicolor and the subject matter.
