In the highly anticipated new novel by John Varley, "one of the genre's most accomplished storytellers" (Publishers Weekly), a manned mission to Mars becomes a personal mission for an unlikely bunch of astronauts: seven suburban misfits who have constructed a spaceship built out of old tanker cars and held together with all-American ambition. They call her Red Thunder. They plan to be the first people on the Red Planet...despite China's big head start. If it didn't sound so crazy, it would be history in the making...

Adult Our Gang to build a rocket from off the shelf equipment & one revolutionary power source to save time & money.
Cute idea of making a science fiction movie or TV series as a cover against snoopy reporters detectives.
Reporters, bureaucrats & scientists went "WTF?" on record breaking speed.
Nice twist on Travis inviting all countries in stadium to debate on how to regulate new power source, because making nuclear weapons was hard, but breakthrough was easy once you understand the higher math equations.
Chinese astronauts lost face for losing the race or eating fresh fruit & regular TV dinners.

I enjoyed reading this story. I found the writing at a younger reading level. I don't think the details would hold up to hard core sci-fi debate.
