I have read and loved this book since I was 14 and found it on my parents' bookshelf. The protagonist is a gentle, loving man who had given his heart & soul to his land, his wife and his children. He gets very little love and respect from those he loves but he never becomes cynical. I love the lyrical descriptions of the crops and the food and the love that finally grows in Ase's wife. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
I can't say enough good things about this book. I found it on my parents' bookshelves as a teen, desperate for something to read. In the intervening 40+ years I have read it 5 times. I am a city person, born & bred and this step into farm life - albeit in the early years of the century - was eye-opening and fascinating. I fell in love with Ase Linden. His story is compelling and I will doubtless read this gem again - at least once!
