It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the tenth annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, eighteen-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to out charm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute.

The odds are against him. He's been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low. Their fates are now completely intertwined—every choice Coriolanus makes could lead to favor or failure, triumph or ruin. Inside the arena, it will be a fight to the death. Outside the arena, Coriolanus starts to feel for his doomed tribute... and must weigh his need to follow the rules against his desire to survive no matter what it takes.

I've given it 5 Stars, not because it was the best book, but because I couldn't put it down, and needed to know what would happen.
Taking place 64 years before the Hunger Games series we know and love. It gives context to the evolution of the Games, the families, and bloodlines that still hold power, and how some of them came to be.
Exciting, Promising, Suspenseful...To take an Antagonist, and make them the Protagonist is a compelling piece of literary fiction. You know who Coriolanus Snow Becomes...but how did he get there? This work of fiction is the key.

A Listen to This staff pick 2020. The Book: An origin story for one of the most hated characters, the man who would become President Snow. The Audio: Santino's dry delivery matches Snow's character to a T.

Gives interesting source material to how the games evolved over time, also some family names crop up from time to time. Snow is a selfish brat at best/evil incarnate at worst, big surprise, but it also shows how Katniss triggered him in the later books. Cool but absolutely necessary? No.
