Alice never believed in magic, and she stuck with that belief until she finds a fluttering magical creature threatening her father one night. That night changed her life forever, as her father left in a hurry, without any hope of returning. After moving in with an uncle she's didn't know existed, she discovers a whole world of magic in her uncle’s library. This book was a thrilling read, with interesting adventures which all end up tying into the main plot. The characters were very likeable, but I found that the hints of romance were a bit forced, because the characters knew little about each other. This was made up however, by the complex relationship the two characters will now have. Overall, it was a very well- written book, and I look forward to reading the next book in the series. 4.5/5

A good read but I still like a bit more action but I still loved it. I like that there's no "bad guy" and the choses Alice has to make are hard. There's a bit of romance but I think this is a good read for kids age 10.

A 12-year old girl loses her father and comes to live with an unusual uncle. She discovers that she has special gifts and becomes an apprentice to a Reader and starts learning about magic. Having read many fantasy works, this one did not cover new territory for me. I was disappointed to find out that it also was a Book 1 in a series so many of the issues were not resolved at the end of the book.

As usual from this author, I have found another book to lose myself in. This book was done in 1 day. I love the attention to detail in personality, depth of plot, and backstory this author does. Even though this was designed to be a shorter book, it still had a large plot. I can't wait to read the next part, and I hope to see more soon. Also a great plus is that added pictures every 75ish pages, if you like to see pictures.

This book is great for people who like magic. I like how the author explains both sides of magic. I hope the next book is as good.

Fun story although pretty simplistic - I did really like how they explained the power of magicians
