The first book in the Sano Ichiro series

Whoopee! I have a new favorite mystery series. The son of a poor samurai, Sano Ichiro is well educated in history and martial arts. He is also honest, altruistic and good at problem solving. Unfortunately, he's stuck in a bureaucracy that values none of these virtues. He does, however, manage to solve the mystery, fight off a plethora of bad guys, and win a promotion to detective for the Shogun. Since maintaining the power of the Shogun will require constant vigilance to outwit those plotting against him, this promises to keep Sano Ichiro very busy. I have checked the next book, Bundori, out of the library. What fun!

Sano Ichiro is the son of a Samurai. The series tells of Sano's journey from lowly foot patrol to chief inspector. Along the way he meets and befriends outcasts, encounters many roadblocks, challenges, class bias, and jealous foes. I enjoy reading all of The Sano Ichiro detective series by Ms. Rowland. Reading her books brings me back to my childhood. Reading her books is like watching those old Japanese samurai/detective t.v. Series in my head.
