One of the best fantasy stories I have ever read. D.M. Cornish has created a world that is as richly imagined as Tolkien.

Our hero is an orphan, but that's not the only obstacle he has to overcome. He has a girl's name, Rossamund-- the name on his blanket when he was abandoned at the orphanage, and he is small which makes him the target for bullies. His dream is to become a sailor on the Vinegar Seas. But, alas none of the ships' captains with hire him because of his size. So he is apprenticed to become a Lamplighter. But he goes to travel to Lamplighter school, he gets on the wrong ship, a ship filled with smugglers! And that is just the start of Rossamund's adventures.
