This monthly, American, magazine wasthe most widely circulated magazine in the period before the American Civil War. It contained articles, music, poetry,articles, and engravings. Each issue had a hand-tinted fashion plate at thefront of the issue, which “provide a record of the progression of women's dress.“ Magazine editor, Sarah Hale (author of "Mary Had a Little Lamb") heldup Queen Victoria as a role model of “femininity, morality and intellect,” and Godey'shired a writer to report on the royal activities in London.
