WhileCzechoslovakia had one of the highest percentages of pre-school children in daycarein the 1980s, the Czech and Slovak Republics are currently among the countrieswith the lowest percentage of children under the age of three in daycare inEurope. The author analyses causes of the decline in daycare in Czech society byapplying the conceptual frame of path dependency. She claims thatthe decline in daycare services is influenced not only by the post-1989 trends, but is embedded in the history of daycare in the region.
