The first exhibit in the Art Gallery in Gander Hall at Maryville College was “Recent Acquisitions” from the Famous-Barr Company. Maryville College received the collection as a gift from the company in December 1969. The exhibition opened with a reception on September 15, 1970, and continued through October 5. It included a dramatic display of a bronze Buddha and a Temple Guardian figure from Siam. Other Far Eastern items included stone, bronze, and brass works. Several figures from Syria in the collection date back to 200-1200BC. Also on view were 19th Century paintings from Jodphur, India. At the close of the exhibit, the collection was placed on permanent display in buildings on the campus. From “Famous-Barr Exhibit Opens New Gallery,” by Andrea Koetting, The Gong, October 23, 1970, page 4
