Call Number: Ms. 185, Reverend Robert Wilson CorrespondenceReverend Robert Wilson (1838-1924) of Charleston, South Carolina, served as a surgeon during the Civil War for the Confederate States Army, and later became an Episcopal minister. At the time of this letter, Wilson was the President of the Charleston Library Society. Theodore Gaillard Barker (b. 1832), also from Charleston, South Carolina, took part in the Civil War as a major for the Confederate States Army and became a lawyer after the war. Barker wrote to Wilson in 1905 to donate an accompanying letter written by Alexander von Humboldt to the Charleston Library Society. That letter can be seen in this digital collection as well. Below is the transcription of this 1905 letter from Barker to Wilson:"Dear SirThe accompanying letter written by Baron Alexander Von Humboldt, at some time prior to 1856, to Mr. Theodore S. Fay then Minister Resident for the United States of America to Switzerland, was given to me by Mr. Fay at Berne Switzerland in December 1856 - and has been in my possession to this time -As an interesting relic of a great man your Society may be willing to preserve it.It has the Autograph of Humboldt and is written by himself. I was told by Mr. Fay, that the peculiar direction given, by the writer, to his lines, tilted upward at an angle, from left to right, is accounted for by a habit, acquired by Humboldt in his jouneyings, of writing on his knee, for want of a desk or table -Mr. Fay, before being Minister Resident of the United States to Switzerland, had been for a long time U S. Charge d’affaires in Berlin, where his intimacy and friendship with Baron Humboldt and his family, had been formed."These items were on display in the Charleston Library Society Main Reading Room throughout the month of September, 2015.
