The real life boxer who was immortalized in this sculpture was "Kid Chocolate," known as the Cuban Featherweight. Richmond Barthe studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 1920s. He was involved in the Harlem Renaissance in the 1930s and lived and worked in Harlem for over 20 years.
