She is the second oldest of 9 siblings and describes growing up working on their grandfather’s farm. It was a huge farm with an additional 8 hired workers to harvest maize, garbanzo beans, mangos, oranges, bananas, avocados and other fruits and vegetables. There was sugar cane and a circular mill drawn by a donkey and it was her job with other siblings to spank the donkey and make it push the stone around. They took turns and so did two other donkeys. She also took care of the pigs and there were chickens, horses and cows. The neighbors called her family “Los Ricos” or the rich. Her grandfather acquired the money for the farm when he discovered a buried pot full of of silver and gold coins. No one used banks then. In Grand Rapids her husband worked at a nursery on Lake Michigan Drive and she worked on Three Mile Rd. as a florist for 9 ½ years and is a participant in the Latin American Services senior program.
