Her family hails from Omaha, Nebraska but they are originally from Helena, AK. She is one of 11 siblings from several marriages on both mother and father’s sides. Recently she acquired an associate’s degree in Gerontology. This is because for 20 years she worked as a CNA with the elderly. She took her father away from her mother and became his guardian until he passed away from an Aneurism in his heart area. Both she and her children took it hard. There were guilt feelings because it was during a time that she developed a substance abuse habit. Her husband of ten years contributed to that and her father and mother both had problems with alcohol or “smoking cigarettes.” To her all addictions meant the same thing as she received conflicting messages. It was her church and not NA that finally helped her “kick” her habit. In Flint, MI where she grew up she was sent to an alternative school. It was all wild but she learned survival skills for living with poverty, like “putting meals together from scratch or the bare necessities.” She said that her mother had never “directly” told her that she loved her. There were some benefits but a lot of problems. Her advice to youth, “don’t do it, you might like it” and she adds that there are a lot of negatives in addiction. Her sense of accomplishment is that she volunteers, is church going, responsible to family, now lives a different way of life and enjoys helping others. This helps her stay clean.
