Photograph of Caroline Sadgwar Manley.Caroline Sadgwar Manley (1871-1965) was born in Wilmington, NC. She was a student at the Gregory Normal School and was awarded a scholarship to attend Fisk University in Nashville. Known as "Carrie," she became a leading soprano in Fisk's Mozart Society and toured the United States and British Isles with the Fisk Jubilee Singers. Carrie returned to Wilmington after graduation and became a school teacher. She was also a member of the choir at the Chestnut Street Presbyterian Church. Carrie married Alex Manley, the former editor and founder of the Daily Record, in Washington D.C., and the coupled settled in Philadelphia, PA. She died at the age of 94 in 1965.
