Based on48 biographic narratives of Czech mothers, the author examines the decisionsthey made about when and how to combine caring for children with making aliving. The analysis reveals that the extension of Czech mothers’ economicinactivity displayed in statistical data in the last decades conceals asituation in which they increasingly more often perform a series of short-termodd jobs while staying officially economically inactive.
