In March 1861, Spurgeon’s congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle in the Southwark area of London. With seating for 5,000 people, the new Metropolitan Tabernacle was the largest church of its day and can be considered a precursor to the modern “megachurch.”
