This painting shows an early 19th-century Inquisition Tribunal, or "auto-da-fé," as they were also called. The Inquisition was not officially abolished until 1834 under the reign of Isabella II, and while not common, accused heretics were still persecuted and put to death for their beliefs, whether truly heretical or not.
