This letter was sent from General Grant to President Lincoln from Vicksburg, Mississippi, July 22, 1868. He argues for the promotion of General Sherman. Grant cited Sherman's role in the Union victory at the Battle of Shiloh, writing "it is not disparagement to any other officer to say that I do not believe there was another Division Commander on the field who had the skill or experience."
