A photograph of Queen Victoria with her munshi (similar to a clerk or secretary), Abdul Karim. Met with much skepticism and opposition upon her appointment of Abdul and another Indian Muslim into her service, Victoria felt these men were necessary to her better understanding the people, culture and language of the Middle East. Abdul Karim was one of Victoria's most trusted advisors, teaching the Queen Hindustani and remaining in her service until her death in 1901.
