Frédéric Chopin and George Sand had a complicated romantic relationship that spanned nearly a decade from 1838 until 1847, two years before his death. At first lovers, Sand eventually became more of a caretaker to the famous composer, whose health was always fragile. Chopin composed many of his works for piano, including this polonaise, while living with Sand during the summers at her estate in Nohant .
