This engraving depicts Bohemond of Taranto scaling the ramparts of Antioch. The siege of Antioch was one of the most grueling and morally-degrading of the First Crusade. Beginning on October 20, 1097, the siege did not end until the beginning of 1099, with plague, massacres and cannibalism occurring before the army finally decamped towards Jerusalem. Bohemond became the first Prince of Antioch.
