Louise Amelia Knapp Smith Clappe moved to California from Massachusetts and wrote a series of letters for The Herald about her experiences. Using the penname Dame Shirley, she wrote throughout 1851 and 1852. The letters were addressed to her sister Mary Jane and depicted life in the mining camps along the Feather River in the 1850s. Her letters vividly portray the landscape and adventure of California.
