This article describes the military history of Venice, telling of how it was first built as as response to barbarian invasion, of Napoleon's taking of the city, to the air raids that needlessly destroyed much of its architecture during World War I. The article offers a different perspective in the history of Venice and how, despite its reputation as a city of novelty, how it rose up out of adversity and has weathered many storms, proving its strength through history.
