Livingstone led his expedition up the Zambezi River to the Shire River in modern day Malawi. The party was stalled here at the Murchison Cataracts (named for Livingstone's friend), as the steamer ship could not navigate up the rapids. One of the party is depicted shooting at a crocodile.
