This is a hand-colored etching by James Gillray created in 1798. The character on the left if John Bull, a caricature of the Nation (and Britain in particular). The serpent, meant to represent the Devil, has the face of Charles James Fox, an English statesman and supporter of the French Revolution. Fox is tempting John Bull with a rotten apple from the tree of "Opposition." John Bull's pockets are already full of prosperous apples from the tree in the background reading "Justice" along the trunk.
