This painting depicts the arrival of Louis VII and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, to the city of Antioch by Eleanor's uncle, Raymond of Poitiers. Raymond expected Louis and his crusaders to help defend against the Turks, but Louis was more interested in a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. It was rumored that at this time Eleanor began having an affair with Raymond, which caused great tension between Eleanor and Louis' marriage. Louis left for Tripoli and brought Eleanor with him by force.
