In this letter to his daughter, Sarah Franklin Bache, Benjamin Franklin criticized the new American hereditary military order of the Society of Cincinnati. He was especially critical of the Society's symbol, a bald eagle. He called it “a Bird of bad moral Character” and stated that it looked “more like a Turk’y. For in Truth, the Turk’y is in comparison a much more respectable Bird.”
