Inducted into the U.S. Army Intelligence Hall of Fame, Bowser is one of the best-known African American spies active during the Civil War. Bowser, a former slave of Elizabeth Van Lew, was educated in the North but returned to Virginia to work with Van Lew in her espionage ring. She accepted a position in the Confederate White House in Richmond, pretending to be an illiterate servant. There she was privy to valuable information, which she passed along to Van Lew.
