Cherokee was one of the first Native American languages to be written. In this scholarly article, C. L. Webster comments on Professor D. W. C. Duncan analysis of the language using a traditional method of grammatical structure and a basic analysis of understanding. The professor notes that "human language is not always and necessarily expressive; it is sometimes in the main only suggestive." While the Cherokee language uses few words to express many meanings, the language is still thought to be relatively advanced.
