This painting depicts a man using a magnifying glass to read. Magnification has been used for centuries. There are ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics that refer to magnification. In the first century CE, Seneca the Younger once documented how letters became larger when viewed through a glass full of water made. People continued to explore the methods and uses of magnification even up to today, when convenience stores sell ready-made glasses that magnify words to ease the reading process.
