This painting depicts the burning of the Parliament building in Montreal in 1849. Montreal was the capital city of the Province of Montreal from 1844–1849, but lost its status after a Tory mob burned down the Parliament in protest of the passage of the Rebellion Losses Bill. The capital was then moved to Ottawa for strategic reasons.
