The Jekyll Island Club was established in 1886 and thrived through the first half of the 20th century with an exclusive membership only open to the world's wealthiest families at the time. John Pierpont Morgan was among the aristocrats who owned winter retreat "cottages," some of them small mansions, on the private island in south Georgia.
