Except for Sookie Stackhouse, folks in Bon Temps, Louisiana, know little about vamps--and nothing about weres. Until now. The weres and shifters have finally decided to reveal their existence to the ordinary world. At first all goes well. Then the mutilated body of a were-panther is found near the bar where Sookie works--and she feels compelled to discover who, human or otherwise, did it. But there's a far greater danger threatening Bon Temps. A race of unhuman beings--older, more powerful, and more secretive than vampires or werewolves--is preparing for war. And Sookie finds herself an all-too human pawn in their battle

It is what it is. I probably wouldn't read this, but I love the TV series...and I am compelled to know more about the Sookie-Eric saga.

Not sure why I still read this series. Habit? I guess a guilty pleasure. It's a quick read. Stilted writing style abit annoying, but Harris thinks up interesting crises for her heroine.

I feel like it wasn't really a book so much as aftermath. And book 10 promises to be MORE aftermath. I'm like, come on, just write a tome the length of a Harry Potter novel and let's be done with it already. But maybe I'm being ungrateful. As Neil Gaiman says, [writers:] are not our bitch.

I'm only mildly disappointed by Quinn's brief and quick appearance/exit in the book. That means he *should* feature more prominently in book 10.

did anyone else feel that Sookie and Jason both underwent a major character overhaul between this book and the last? I almost think I missed something.

and Eric saying, "you're killing me." Heart wrenching stuff.

Do you think Bill is dead & gone (har har)? CH did seem to be saying good-bye to him.

the last book had the big armageddon like catastrophe but this book really felt more like the end of days. And we were just on the periphery of the war. No Harry Dresden like Nevernever to cross over into & explore...

Sookie was a less a problem solver in this book than a passive participant in the unfolding of events. That bugs me. I miss team Amelia/Sookie solving crimes & painting toes...

Overall, not my favorite, but will always look forward to what comes next.

Agree with other people, not one of her best. Let's hope book 10 is better.

We finally lern about Sookie in this book! true to Sookie's form, there is a lot of Eric vs bill going on as well. The magical world is becoming more well-rounded too.

As usual for Charlaine Harris a good read. I did feel that this was a "filler" book, by filler book I mean when the author is writing to meet contract obligations and needs to stretch out the story line.

I absolutely LOVE this series and have been awaiting this book to be out for what feels like forever. I enjoyed all the previous books and love all the characters. But I cannot believe this one! I feel so cheated! It seems like this book was just written to meet a deadline. There's so much going on all the time that it's hard to follow, but at the same time there's nothing going on.
Like in the part when Sookie goes to her brothers house and they're talking with Mel and then you turn the page and all these people show up and she says she called them and I was completely lost. I kept going back and forth to see what I had missed, or if there had been a page torn out.
The entire book was like this.
