Not long after Hank, Ana, and Milo Vasquez's father leaves, an alien named Luz arrives and uses them to satisfy his curiosity, then leaves them forever changed.
When the Vasquez siblings' father left, there was an absence in their lives-- until a shimmering figure named Luz appeared in the canyon behind their house. He shot hoops with Hank's hands. He showed Ana cinematic beauty behind her eyelids. He spoke kindly to Milo. But when Luz left, he took something from each of them. As a new school year begins, Hank, Ana, and Milo question how can they ever feel close to other people again when Luz changed everything about how they see the world and themselves.

This book is a tough one to get into because it starts with so much pain. All four main protagonists are raw with the pain of recently suffered trauma, and entering into their worlds is hard. Thankfully, from that starting point they are able to slowly move into the process of recovery, so there is much more to the reading experience than that entry point. In some respects this story is a journey of healing, but there are also unexpected conflict and science fiction drama, so it's not as simple as that. It is compelling and complex, just like the characters. The book is thoughtful, suspenseful, tangible, and immersive. I value the time I spent with these people, and I'm still thinking about and feeling for them.
