Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins Surviving has always been Katniss’s way of life in District 12 of Panem. Never enough money, she learned to hunt illegally with her friend Gale over the fence to feed herself and her family. It is the time of the Reaping, when one boy and one girl, ages 12 to 18, will be chosen from each of the twelve districts as tributes to the Hunger Games. When her 12 year sister Prim is called, time stops. How could this happen to her sweet Prim, and on her first ever Reaping? Katniss surges to the front of the crowd to volunteer as tribute. The boy tribute is Peeta, the son of the baker that once saved her life when she was starving to death. She leaves her family and friends in District 12, knowing this very well be the last time she will see them. Only one may win the Hunger Games out of the 24 tributes. With the drunken Haymitch as Peeta and Katniss’s mentor, they seemed doomed, but maybe not. Katniss is forced to fight for her life in the Hunger Games and make decisions that weigh love against life. This book was intense and I was hooked on every page I turned. Katniss faces conflict between love and survival, and some moments were so heart clenching, beautiful, and edge-of-your-seat thrilling! I recommend this book to those who enjoy rebellion, action/adventure, dystopian fiction and romance.
