The first novel of “The Hunger Games” trilogy is set in the future nation of Panem which used to be the USA. Panem is divided into thirteen districts with District 13 destroyed. A girl and a boy between ages 12-18 from each district (Tributes) are forced by The Capitol to compete in the Hunger Games. This game is a violent fight to the death where the last person alive is the victor. The whole country is required to watch these games and are considered entertainment for The Capitol. A girl named Katniss from district 12 was chosen along with a boy named Peeta for the Hunger Games. Katniss must survive the Hunger Games with the help of her sharp archery skills and a fake romantic relationship with Peeta. What I liked about this book was that the different sides of each character were shown, the reader gets to know the main characters very well. I also liked getting to know the common behaviors and mindsets of various districts. What I disliked about this book was the fake romantic relationship between Katniss and Peeta. I believe that the fake relationship became an unnecessary burden in the games for both characters. I also think the author, Suzanne Collins, could have given more background information on the creation and history of Panem and the Hunger games.
