Vollman, a National Book Award winner, explores poverty across time and cultures. In most countries, he interviewed people who earned $1.00 a day U.S.with interpreter help. When asked why the person was poor, most answers reflected some version of fate -- karma, reincarnation, loss of job, loss of health, etc. The author's photographs of his subjects portray their humanity. The most arresting part of the book was the author's description of the poor who frequented the parking lot of his home in Sacramento, California.
