Mother! (2017) hearkens back to director Darren Aronofsky's earlier movies like Pi and The Fountain, when he was more interested in psychological impact than concrete storytelling. He aims for the gut, and succeeds in unleashing a Pandora’s Box of feminine anxieties that, at times, make Woolf’s writing feel downright roomy by comparison. The cacophonous acting and stifling cinematography only add to the apprehension. For my part, I’d need to watch the film again before I could wrap my head around all of it. If you like your gender issues flavored with a dash of claustrophobia, then Mother! is the movie for you.
